ETC Orientation Take-aways

I came away from the English Tutoring Center orientation feeling much better about my commitment to tutor two students starting next week. I especially liked that James mentioned that the ETC also has a social justice aspect to it since it provides a resource to students who often-times would not otherwise be able to or know how to seek assistance outside the classroom. I enjoyed learning the ways they have institutionalized assisting writers through the years and was glad to know they have handouts we can give students on particular subjects/trouble areas. I also was relieved to know that the first session should focus on building rapport with our students. It takes the pressure off of accomplishing something significant in the first few sessions, and I know doing that will be a lot easier once my students and I know where each other are coming from.

  1. I agree that building rapport will help accomplish more down the line, and it definitely does take off some pressure. I have a silly question: do you remember where those handouts are?

  2. I completely agree with your last comment about using the first session to build rapport with the student. I think, as a tutor, our tutees have to feel comfortable around us and this is the perfect way to do that! Share something embarrassing so they see that you are human too! (This usually works for me!)

Can't wait to see how we all like the ETC!
