Essay 8 Brainstorm

What grammatical, stylistic and rhetorical issues should be taught in Freshman Composition?  What should students be proficient in before they move on to other college courses?

• Goal should be focused on growth and depends on where the class is at the beginning of the semester
• Having different expectations/goals for each student
• Few spelling, tense, subject-verb agreement errors
• Going over common errors in class after an assignment has just been turned in
• Some sense of organized writing, whether that's a five-paragraph essay, creating a thesis, using topic sentences, each paragraph having an overall topic
• Instilling the importance of writing for specific audiences
